I created these writing pages as a way to collect samples from my students throughout our different writing units. They are not meant as instructional pieces or published work to display, rather just for data collection to (hopefully!) show growth over time. Of course, you can use them in whatever way fits your individual needs.
The set contains four pages for each of the following types of writing: Personal Narrative, Fictional Narrative, How-To, and Writing an Opinion. Each page has multiple topics at the top so that students can choose the one they feel they can write about with the most detail. I have my students highlight their choice.
Typically, I will give my students one before we start a certain writing unit to get a feel for their ability and to guide my instruction.
I will give another halfway through and then a final one at the end of the unit. Then I still have one more to use at another point in the year. You may not need all four writing pages, but I’ve included them so you can choose which work best for you.
