Do you struggle to find interesting writing that appeals to your students for writing mini-lessons? This is a selection of narrative, opinion, and informational writing pieces that were generated and developed with third graders, each over a period of 2-3 lessons. They could be used for any upper elementary level. Lessons address all writing standards; you can use the samples with each genre to point out select elements, such as introducing the setting and character in the beginning, or using descriptive language. You can even point out places that could use revision, as these were not "polished" pieces, though they do address all standards. Included in each set are samples that need revising. There is one rough draft for each genre, and there are 3 narrative samples, 3 opinion/persuasive samples, and 1 informational sample.
