Building Sentences and Learning About Good Writing. This teaching resource is perfect for whole class, small group or home school instruction on writing sentences in the first grade. They also might be used for Kindergarteners at end of school year or those Ks who need a challenge. :) It can easily be part of a writing or literacy center. Students learn that you need a subject and a predicate to make a complete sentence or thought; and also you can add a modifier to make your sentence more interesting. Terms used in this lesson plan are: noun, verb, subject, predicate, who, what, where, when, and how.

Included in this teaching resource:

  • 24 subject parts of a sentence
  • 24 action parts of a sentence
  • 24 modifier parts of a sentence

These parts are printed on colored paper to distinguish the three parts readily. Download, print and copy... cut sentence parts, then use in a pocket chart or literacy center.

Students mix and match the 3 parts to make hundreds of sentences... and yes, some can be quite silly but that makes it more fun. They begin to see the start of a sentence begins with a capital letter and the end of a sentence is marked with a period.

Recording sheets are included or you could also easily have your students write their sentences in their writing notebooks or journals.

Header cards are also included so you can teach the terms. Pocket chart activity is engaging for the whole class ; then use them again for small groups or independent work. Thank you for previewing this teaching resource.
