These sentence writing activities are a great way to reinforce sentence structure, vocabulary, grammar and syntax with young learners. They are visual, interactive and engaging for learners especially ESL/ELL students. They are very simple to use, just print each page one day at a time and advise the students that they will be making their ‘Mystery Picture Sentence Booklets’ – each student can go at their pace but it is advisable to do one sentence per day as it will take time to color the picture, cut up the strips, assemble the words and paste them in order to make a complete sentence. Sentences build on vocabulary words and common sight words.
**Optional** After each completed ‘mystery sentence’ the teacher can check each student’s sentence or she can simply write the sentence on the board so that the students can see if they have done it correctly – if they have, they color in a smiley face on the cover of their booklets and if they haven’t they color in a sad smiley face. You can at the end of the month give rewards to those who completed their booklets correctly – but I like rewarding all the students for their efforts. The reward system is there for positive reinforcement and encouragement and it’s completely optional.
Winter vocabulary words include: sled, snow, cocoa, boots, sled, bears, winter, sleep, penguin, ice, skate, mittens, blue, scarf, snowman, earmuffs, snowball, reindeer, skating, snowflake, icicle, hat.
Sight words include: my, is, this, do, you, like, I, some, would, brown, has, on, we, the, are, in, a, see, to, likes, blue, let's, build, big, there.
Your students will LOVE these booklets.
