One important “ writing” question that resurfaces every year is “Where do I write the next sentence? Do I continue writing on the same line, or do I drop down to the next line?” Another basic question is , “Why, and How, do I begin a new paragraph?”
I created this lesson as a response to those questions. It Includes: instruction, guided practice, examples, modeling, answer keys and a Formative Assessment .
There are two reasons for beginning a new paragraph:
1. Writing dialogue. When a new character begins speaking, a new paragraph should begin. I also address this in another lesson- Writing Dialogue
2. Changing the Main Idea-The focus of this lesson.
Students will learn through modeling and example that an entire written selection is about one topic, but each paragraph tells something different about that topic. In other words, each paragraph has a different Main Idea.
The strategies I am presenting have worked for me. I would appreciate feedback about how it worked for you.
Best wishes, Ginger
