This is the fourth unit to my "Writing Strategies Set." The “Quick Writing With Task Cards Strategy” is a strategy used to encourage student writing without having them spend too much time thinking. The goal is to give them pictures/prompts and allow them to write quickly and creatively the first thoughts that come to their mind. They should not focus on grammar or spelling at this point and just get their ideas on paper. Encourage students to write for 5-10 minutes without stopping. You can back, laminate and put on a ring for long term use. Or put aside as a literacy center!
There are five strategy posters that explain each strategy. Each strategy has 8 task card activities to match. Leave the posters somewhere in the classroom as samples for students to refer back to as a writing strategy. The five Quick Write Strategies include:
Quick Write With a Photo-Students will take a photo and use it to start writing a story based on the scene.
Quick Write by Drawing a Picture-Students will draw a picture using the word on the task card. The picture will be part of their brainstorming process for starting their story.
Quick Write Using a Sentence Starter- Students will start a story using the sentence that is on the task card
Quick Write Using Lists-Students will make a list of 5-10 things using the prompt they are given.
Quick Write Using a Memory-Students will start a story based on the memory prompt given.
