Are you looking for a terrific book to launch Writer's Workshop? This lesson plan features Manfish by Jennifer Berne to help students find their Writing Territories (areas of expertise that make great writing!)

The lesson plan, which includes 3 pages of plans, one printable for students, and one checklist to aid in assessment, will lead students through an activity to help them explore the idea of Writing Territories in Jacques Cousteau's life, and also in their own. Jacques Cousteau's life lends itself very easily to introducing writers to this important concept. After completing this activity, students will be ready to plan and write a fiction piece of their own.

The lesson plan also uses the book Manfish by Jennifer Berne to teach students about theme or central message. Then they analyze Jacques Cousteau's Writing Territories. Finally, they begin a list of their own writing territories.
