This is a 5-day lesson plan with everything you need to teach 1st and 2nd graders how to write a friendly letter, while thinking of others. This is not your typical letter to Santa!
I designed also this lesson to encourage social skills
and build character
, as well as to teach letter writing.
Instead of writing the usual self-centered letter asking Santa to fulfill their demands, the children will ask him to bring a gift to someone else
. That “someone” can be a sibling, a parent, a relative, a friend, or a group of people. As the children begin and end the letter, students are also encouraged to think about Santa Claus and his needs during this busy time.
Youngsters who celebrate Christmas are used to thinking of themselves and what they want what they want Santa to bring them for Christmas. This lesson gives them an opportunity to show that they can think of others, too!
The kit includes:
†Lesson plans for 5 days
†Writing Dates,12 Months of the Year, and Being Thoughtful Worksheets
†Grade 1 and 2 Graphic Organizers
†Rubric for evaluating letters
†Sample Letter with Revisions
†1st and 2nd grade Checklists
†Writing Paper options
†Pocket Chart and Table Top sentence strips
†Grade 1 and 2 Posters
The thoughtful letter to Santa has these parts:
The body, or main message, of the letter has 3 parts:
•a thoughtful question about Santa
•asking Santa to bring a gift to someone
•a hope for Santa
After planning, writing a 1st draft, revising, and writing a final draft
, the students read the letters to each other.
The lessons follow closely the Common Core Writing standards.
