I have come to love tic-tac-toe boards and started using them as a way to differentiate for students. This is my volume one set of 5 writing Tic-Tac-Toe Boards, a rubric, a due date sheet, and editable pages (blank tic-tac-toe, rubric and due date sheet) to make adjustments as needed for your classroom.
The boards can be presented in any order and contain persuasive, argumentative, explanatory, and creative prompts for high school students.
Select, print, and copy a board and rubric for students. Review expectations and requirements before assigning the first round of writing prompts. I also copy the due date sheet to the back of the board as a reference sheet for my students.
Students will select three options from the board. You can give class time, do a timed writing, or assign the writing as homework. This is a great sub assignment, especially if students know the procedure. The time frame for completion can vary at your choosing. I give a writing choice board once a month- there is enough for one semester of writing boards. This product is the first volume of writing boards. I will post a subsequent volumes soon.
After students submit their written work, print and copy the rubric for grading. Score the prompts as 4-3-2-1. Place a check mark in the square that matches the score. You can choose to assign a point value for the work (I multiply the score by 10) or simply use the writing as practice and self reflection. You may also choose to have students participate in scoring their own work or peer work.
There are so many ways you can use them in your class, but here are just a few:
With any story, novel or play
Differentiation- can create or adjust writing prompts for students
