These mini writing workshops are designed to help teachers directly address key writing traits when and where needed in small chunks. It can be stressful to write and teach writing, so I created these worksheets to give my students not only the rules and methods they needed all one place, but also to provide real examples of these traits. With writing formulas, notes, tips, examples, guided annotations, and evaluation, your students will no longer struggle with "eating the elephant" that is writing. And you will no longer be stressing over having the right materials ready to go when needed.
Use these tools for teaching writing throughout the semester to improve student writing where needed. If you notice students struggling with word choice, host a quick workshop using those materials included here. If you prefer small groups, set up a writing center with the syntactic variety pages, and let students guide themselves through the notes and examples. Feel free to post a page or two in your secure online classroom, and let students virtually annotate and discuss one of the seven full-length sample essays included. You know your student writers best, and this resource is flexible enough for any classroom. Whether your students are in the drafting or revising stage – whether they are struggling or excelling – these mini writing workshops will be just “right”!
Can be used as singles. Can be printed and bound as a workbook. Can be glued into a writer’s notebook. Can be projected on the board for whole-group teaching.
