These are my lesson plans for a writing unit on Informative/Nonfiction Writing that compares the countries Italy and China. To begin this unit, you will first need to gather a bunch of books/texts on both countries for the students to do their research.
All lessons are written in a mini-lesson format and the plans follow components of the Danielson Framework.
This unit consists of 9 lesson plans. The outline for the unit is as follows because some of the lessons I repeated so I could spend multiple days on the same skill:
1. Begin taking notes
2. Create headings
3. Adding key words and definitions
4. Continue taking notes
5. Continue taking notes
6. Draft an introduction
7. Begin drafting with linking word that show the comparison
8. continue drafting
9. continue drafting
10. draft a conclusion
12. continue revising
13. edit for capitals and punctuation
14. continue editing for capitals and punctuation
All lesson plans include the following components: unit, lesson topic, objective (written in the “Today I will __ so that I can __. I’ll know I’ve got it when __.” format), Common Core Learning Standards, materials, vocabulary, motivation/connection, learning plan, higher order thinking questions, assessment, differentiation, closure, and reinforce and extend learning.
I included some of the graphic organizers that I used for this lesson. There are three different organizers so that you can differentiate the work. The first one on pages 11-12 is a lower level graphic organizer, pages 13-15 is a middle level graphic organizer, and pages 16-18 is a higher level graphic organizer.
