This Writing Workshop Mini Bundle is perfect for emergent writers. This resource is packed with writing workshop anchor charts, individualized student checklists, and writing/journal paper...all the materials you will need to kick-start writing workshop in your K-1 classroom. Students will use the Writing Checklist included in this packet to proofread their own writing, ensuring that they are following basic conventions of writing (uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence, lowercase letters throughout a sentence, finger spaces between words, and a period at the end of the sentence).
In this resource you will receive the following:
“My Writing Checklist” Anchor Chart: Perfect to laminate and hang near your whole group modeling area as a reference. You could also use this during instruction time as you work on writing with small groups or individuals.
“My Writing Checklist” Student Paper: This paper matches the anchor chart. Simply copy and cut in half. Students will use this paper to check their writing upon completion. They will color each smiley face to indicate that they remembered each rule. If a rule was forgotten, students should go back to their writing, correct it, and then color the smiley face. You can choose to give students a paper copy of this checklist for each piece of writing they complete. Or, you could laminate the checklists and have students keep them in their writing folder or desk. They could use a dry erase marker to color in the smiley faces, and erase when they are finished checking.
“Steps for Writing” Anchor Chart: Perfect to laminate and hang in your classroom. This chart lists 4 steps for writing: think and draw with pencil, write sentences, check your work, add details and color. These are the steps that we follow in my own classroom and they work great for kinders!
“Rules of Writing” Anchor Charts (4): Perfect to laminate and hang in your classroom. These charts match each of the conventions listed on the checklist and are as follows:
I can use an uppercase letter at the beginning of my sentence.
I can use lowercase letters throughout my sentence.
I can use finger spaces between my words.
I can use a period at the end of my sentence.
“What Can I Write About?” Anchor Chart: Perfect to laminate and hang near your whole group modeling area or small group conferencing area. Topics include: Colors I Like, Animals, My Birthday, My Toys, School, On a Sunny Day, On a Rainy Day, Foods I Like, My Friends.
You will also receive 5 types of writing paper for your students to use:
Option 1: A blank space for drawing and four lines for writing
Option 2: One box for drawing and four lines for writing
Option 3: Two boxes for drawing and four lines for writing
Option 4: Four boxes for drawing and four lines for writing
Option 5: Eight writing lines (this may need to be attached to the four-box page so students have enough room to write about all 4 of their ideas)
The boxes I have included on some of the writing pages are for students to brainstorm their writing ideas. For example, if students were writing about their favorite animals, they would draw a different animal in each box. Then, they would write a sentence to represent each box. Last, they would use the checklist to proofread each sentence. They could then also go back to color their drawings and add details.
I have also included a fun “My Writing Journal” Cover page in case you would like to assemble the writing pages into journals for your students! (Boy and Girl Cover included)
