The following lessons are intended for the first 4-5 weeks of the school year. However, they can be implemented anytime a teacher would like to begin an authentic writing workshop in his/her classroom. Students need to have a writer's notebook (any notebook will do). Teachers will use chart paper or some way to model writing and save it for future reference. Otherwise, all that is required is a classroom full of students with great ideas and your enthusiasm and consistency. Teaching each lesson in order allows your students to complete at least three drafts before the idea of publishing is ever introduced. This, along with your consistent modeling, daily use of writing partners, and careful conferencing, creates an equation for a successful writing workshop in any classroom!
