In this activity, students write their own addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problem (it can be with whole numbers, decimals, or fractions). A word bank containing key words that signal each operation is included in each box. For example, when students write their addition word problem, they are given a word bank containing addition key words such as "in all," "combined," "altogether," etc. This scaffold helps all students to achieve the learning target of creating their own word problem. When I did this with my students, I had the students trade papers and solve each other's word problem. They were extra invested in the activity since they developed the problems themselves! PDF file.
