This package includes the steps for writing a structured character sketch paragraph.
It uses the short story "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" as a guideline to writing the sketch. The guideline breaks down the parts of the paragraph with sentences that the students can use to model their own paragraph.
Also, included is an exemplar character sketch, graphic organizer and an evaluation tool for the paragraph that the students write.
Use Ambose Bierce's short story as a guide to helping students find character traits and then have the students choose their own short story to write their own paragraph.
The lesson will require reading the short story and guiding the students through the format for writing -- students will work on inference skills in their search for character traits. The initial teaching piece will take about 6 hours -- students can then be given time to select and read a short story and use what they have learned to write an expanded character sketch. You could also use media celebrities -- as long as the student can provide support for each trait that is presented.
