This *92-slide* PowerPoint breaks down a literary essay into clear, discrete steps over 1-2 weeks, and uses The Lion King as a model literary "text" to creatively show students how to outline their essays, write clear theses & topic sentences, insert quotes and transitions, and construct effective introductions and conclusions.
I've refined and added to this over five years with both pre-IB English students and with ESL students who have never written a literary essay before, and a friend who's used it with her (inner-city) AP students said it's been extremely helpful for them.
Included are: a model literary essay based on The Lion King (with annotations in the margins); a literary essay packet that includes explanations of quotes, symbols and outlining; and a bonus 22-slide Compare & Contrast PowerPoint (used for a Romeo & Juliet/West Side Story compare & contrast essay, but could be modified for other uses).
