Students can use this story map when writing a mystery story. It helps to keep the student organized and not lose their place in their own story. In teaching special needs students for 15 years, I've noticed that any organizational tool that you can provide to a student in writing, they will at least be willing to try it once. Sometimes, it works for good, other times other things need to be tried. This "Mystery Map" has been helpful in students creating fictional mysteries. Within the map, the students have to answer, "Did the solution the character try work?" and if their answer is NO, they have to go back and add a 2nd or even a 3rd attempt at solving the problem. I love this tool.
