This is by far one of the most important assignments I offer students. I ask them a series of questions: a directed free write! The questions move from fairly straightforward to increasingly more symbolic. This allows students to begin to see themselves and their lives as important and worthy of a poem. By asking them what color their names are, what body of water, music, etc., they start to see how easy it is to create metaphors and to create poems that they can and will treasure for a long time to come! I highly recommend this assignment.
