I love teaching the personal narrative. Students usually have lots of stories they want to tell! We call these small moment or seed stories because the focus is on writing about one moment (SEED) and writing about it with lots of details rather than the (BIG PUMPKIN) or whole day. This file includes the following materials to help support you and your students as they learn how to write a personal narrative. This file includes the following:
A personal narrative pumpkin sign to use when you display final products
Three pages of notes that I have students glue down in writer’s folders. One is on what a personal narrative is, one is on using quotations and one is on using similes.
Two Graphic Organizers: One is to record seed story ideas. The other is for sketching out the main moment and recording sensory words to include in the story.
A drafting paper. This can be used for drafting or for the final rewrite.
A grading rubric for you to use in assessing the final product.
A cover for your students if they would like to write more personal narratives and combine them into one book. You could also copy each of the narratives your students have written and make one class book.
Three pages of explanations on the steps I take in teaching this unit with names of the mentor books I use
