This Rich Bits of Lit activity asks students to listen to several songs from the soundtrack of the 2013 film adaption of _The Great Gatsby_ and requires them to take notes on each song. The visually attractive handout lists questions at the top for them to contemplate while they are listening. The second part of the handout requires them to rate the soundtrack as a whole and provide a rationale for their decision.
This activity is an excellent way to assess their understanding of character, mood, and theme in the novel, and they get to listen to music while doing it!
This activity could take anywhere from 30 minutes to more than one class period, depending on how long you want to spend on it. You would not have to listen to all of the songs.
I suggest doing this activity prior to watching the film.
Please note you will need access to the songs listed on the handout. I have only included school appropriate songs on handout (the soundtrack has some songs on it with a parental warning).
