Writing a Summary Common Core PPT + Worksheet Bundle - Camping Theme
In creating this writing a summary unit, one of my goals was to present the topic in a way that wouldn't overwhelm the learner. This summarizing unit contains a 21 page PowerPoint presentation + 12 printable worksheets - some which can be used throughout the year. I have chosen a hiking/camp theme to raise the students' interest.
Below is a list of activities included in this unit:
--21 Slide PowerPoint Presentation which introduces summarizing. There is a short interactive quiz at the end of the presentation.
--Lost Dog + Fishing Stories - Students write a short summary for each story. They use strategies taught in the PowerPoint lesson.
--Got Headlines? Activity - Having students write headlines is a great way to get them to focus on the main idea of an article.
--Create Your Own Classified Ads! - Students write a classified ad based on the information provided.
--May I Ask You a Few Questions? Form - This Who, What, When, Where, How form is a great tool to use for breaking down narrative selections.
--Somebody Wanted, But, Then, So Chart - This worksheet helps students to focus on cause/effect relationships and the order of events in a narrative selection.
--Storing Your Thoughts Activity Worksheet - This form can help students retrieve important details from informational text. It can then be used as notes for a summary. This form is a great tool to use with Weekly Reader articles or other content area reading selections.
--My Summary Log - This summary log allows students to save their summaries as well as monitor their progress throughout the year.
--Super Summarizer Award - Use this form to reward your students for their achievements.
Answer keys are included where applicable.
