These organizers will help your students to write well organized summaries of a book or chapter of a book. Well-detailed directions will explain how to use this format, with your main idea focused on first and broken into “Name It” (the book or chapter title), “Verb It” (the author’s purpose – inform, explain, entertain, persuade), and then the “Finish It”, which is the main idea or main focus of the story. When students have mastered main idea, then you can build it into a 4-sentence summary where you add the main idea and three important details together to compose a 4-sentence summary that covers the main idea and three important details related to that main idea. There is a book and chapter summary example for you to see and share with your students to guide their understanding of summary writing. Also included is a 4-point summary rubric so that you can provide feedback on your students' completed summaries.
There is a main idea organizer (half-page with two on each page) and then a full organizer with the main idea and details, directions on how to use this resource, examples of book and chapter summaries with the graphic organizer and written as a paragraph, and a 4-point rubric for scoring purposes.
Please ask questions if you have any concerns BEFORE leaving feedback. It is my goal to leave you 100% satisfied with your resource.
