This is a common-core aligned lesson on how to write a thesis statement and includes three activities (group and individual) and handouts. It also requires access to Youtube for a video clip. It is not a powerpoint lecture, but instead is a series of activities designed to get the kids engaged in analyzing and writing their own thesis statements. I've had great success with this mini-unit.
This lesson is best used following the reading/analysis/discussion of any text. Students should already have developed their thinking and have an opinion about a text, so that they can apply the lesson and write a thesis statement.
This lesson has worked great in 9th grade inclusion classes as well as honors level.
