Description
This packet is part of my series: Writing about Mathematics – Calculus. This particular activity is about secant and tangent lines and the concept of the derivative.
I have found that in order for calculus students to really internalize all of the information they are being given, they must write about it themselves. Writing helps the teacher find misconceptions that the students have.
Students are given a diagram and a list of words which must be used to write a paragraph about the diagram. Students use the lessons they have learned about secant lines and tangent lines to write a paragraph. Perhaps you would like the students to highlight or underline the required words.
Completed paragraphs can be hung on bulletin boards or in the hallway.
I have included a sample paragraph.
