I enjoy the use of these thinking maps for my students. It is a visual way to organize writing.
I start out with the CIRCLE MAP to brainstorm ideas related to a writing prompt. The topic is in the center of the circle and the brainstorm ideas are part of the outer circle. I tell my student to brainstorm the 5 W's (Who, did What, When, Where, and Why)
and at least three events.
From there, they create their FLEE map (FLOW + TREE). I have the students focus on the main ideas and the three significant details for that main idea. They create opening paragraph (Who, Did What, When, Where, and sometimes Why) and work on the closing paragraph.
