This product contains two parts: a handout and a practice activity, both focused on writing an effective and organized essay introduction.
The handout includes definitions/descriptions and examples of the different parts of an introduction. I include hook, background info, and thesis/claim. There are examples for different types of essays (though all examples center around Edgar Allen Poe, students do not need to know about him, and they should translate well into other essay topics.)
The practice gives sample topics (yourself and your school) and asks students to write an introduction for each, using the information on the handout as a guide.
These can be used as a mini-lesson or just given for reference. Thy are perfect to keep in their interactive notebooks or binders and reference throughout the year. The practice makes a great warm-up or homework assignment. It can also be used as an assessment of their introduction writing skills.
