This lesson is meant to be used as guided notes for an entire class. (It works best when preceded by the Writing Numerical Expressions lesson) Students begin by defining variables, and in turn, defining algebraic expressions. We then translate from verbal to algebraic, with emphasis on common mistakes (7 less than, twice the sum of, etc.). Next, we apply this skill to real-world scenarios (earned $4 per hour plus tips, tripling my money and then losing $100, etc.). Finally, we work on identifying terms, like terms, coefficients, and constants.
The included assignment is based off of the guided notes.
