In this naturally differentiating writing project, students will create a holiday that they think the United States needs, either to honor an important person, organization, or a notable event in history. First, they research a topic of their choice, and then they write an essay to persuade the "U.S. Congress" to make their new holiday an official holiday. Finally, they will present the essay as a speech.
The great thing about this project is that students are researching topics that are interesting to them. They find fun facts that they didn't know about their favorite technology devices, sports, hobbies, or organizations, and the people who created these things.
