Start by collecting some photographs. I go to antique stores and thrift shops. There is almost always a collection of old photos at reasonable prices. I choose photos in which there are at least two people. And I do my best to find photos in which something is going on; it could be a fishing trip in the 50s or an awkward family photo in front of a Christmas tree. I need to sense relationships and/or tension. Perhaps this is a post-war family with a missing relative. When students freewrite about the photo, encourage them to note points of tension or where someone might be missing. Remember that without some hint at conflict, this exercise is nothing more than an exercise. What are the hidden stories? Whose narrative needs to be remembered?
