Students read a primary source on how the Declaration of Independence came to be (based on memoirs and written letters) and answer 7 questions of varying degrees of difficulty. There are then 3 questions where students transport themselves to Revolutionary War America and balance historical accuracy, creativity, and their opinions in their answers. This would be great for a sub and the answers are included where appropriate!
Sample questions include:
--Describe how it came to be Jefferson who primarily authored the Declaration of Independence.
--Why do you think it mattered that Jefferson was from Virginia?
--Inferring from prior knowledge and the text, what opinion of slavery did Jefferson originally put in the Declaration?
--Explain the phrase “the vehement philippic against Negro slavery” in your own words.
--The Declaration of Independence has been signed, sent to King George, and read. Write what you think his reaction was upon receipt of the document. Balance historical accuracy with creativity.
