This is an early writing learning task which is heavily scaffolded and supported. The student is shown a mindmap and a writing scaffold for writing to express their opinion. Two annotated examples are given before students are presented with a number of opinion statements and asked to complete a mindmap and then to use the mindmap to construct the opinion piece using the given scaffold.
The writing tasks could be given over a period of weeks until the student feels comfortable in using the given structure. If the given opinion statements are not of interest to the student, suggest to the student that they use their own. It is best if the opinion statement is a positive statement. It is much easier to address at this early writing stage.
