Writing with colors changed my whole perspective on writing instruction--brainstorming, drafting, organizing, revising, peer-feedback, and refining. Each of these steps can feel elusive and frustrating for many students, so pairing each one with a color helps them anchor their thoughts and process into understanding and mastery.
This process is so valuable for students at all levels from upper elementary through high school and for all learners. This was particularly helpful for my ELL students.
This packet includes an exemplar, classwork page and homework page, all editable to fit your class' needs. I designed this packet for Night, but have used it for other texts, as well, both fiction and non-fiction.
I never thought high schoolers would be so excited to use colored pencils, but they were! It also fostered an environment of risk-taking and confidence from even my most timid writers. It's a great way to start the year off teaching writing organization!
Enjoy! As always, I'd love to chat if you have any questions or feedback!
