Teaching writing is probably one of the most challenging jobs a teacher has. Students generally write the way they speak or text! Our job is to show them that they have within them the words and ideas to write with interest and with their own style.
I use this activity to show my students that they have a style, or they can develop a style without a lot of pain and suffering.
My students love this activity and would do it every day if they had the choice.
The steps are easy.
The job is to describe the object without using the obvious words or ideas.
I write with my students and share my writing. I may share first, or I may share after they have shared.
I let each student read his or her writing and give immediate feedback. I always find the best part of the writing and offer any helpful hints if needed.
Over time students begin to see that they can write interesting pieces of text. It builds their confidence. Their style begins to surface in their writing. Writing with Style--Helping Students Develop Their Personal Writing Style
