This "Types of Writing Matching Game" will help your students identify which type of writing different prompts are expecting. We spend ample time teaching them to write narratives, opinion pieces, and informative paragraphs but without honing in on the keywords that will let them know which of the three types is expected. Students master the concepts of first finding keywords within writing prompts and subsequently matching the type of writing required. Finally (done either together or as a separate task) the final colored task cards include prompts from released state tests. This activity is created for third to sixth graders and is a hands-on activity that your kids will enjoy! Student tested!
66 matching/task cards
3-page answer key divided by type of writing
Two ways to use:
1. Print cards in color and use altogether as a matching activity
2. Teacher divides each color card set (types of writing, keywords, and prompts) into separate baggies. Students can then play two separate games beginning with keywords and types of writing matching activity, and followed by subsequent prompts and types of writing activity.
