Frustrated with using writing strategies that don't work? Maybe they only work for 'certain types' of questions? Need a simple solution that works EVERY time? Here it is!
This is a strategy I created to help my students use EVIDENCE to support their written responses. It's a simple formula - literally, a 1-2-3 step process. After implementing the 1-2-3 strategy with my students, my students have made the following comments,
"I'm not afraid to write answers any more."
"I can't get anything I write wrong as long as I do the strategy."
"My grades have gotten better in all my subjects because I use the strategy."
"My mom is a teacher and she started using this strategy when she saw it on my papers. Her kids like it, too."
"I feel so much more confident in my answers."
This strategy prepares students for the CCSS. It forces them to look back into the text for specific information that supports their answer.
Another bonus to using this strategy is it also doubles as a rubric. The students have to clearly demonstrate all three requirements to receive full credit. I write 1-2-3 next to their answer and circle what they've hit and give them points on it.
I hope you use the strategy and your students feel confident, too.
Please keep in mind you are purchasing an idea...not a bunch of products. You can apply this strategy to materials you already have. I am a huge fan of ReadWorks.org and this strategy works amazingly with those articles!
