The Meticulous English Teacher Presents:
A passage based quiz that requires students to read for details and to actually read the novel rather than relying on online summaries. It is a quick assessment that will take minutes for students to take and (even more importantly) minutes for you to assess!
I have found that this style of quiz gives me a good idea about how closely my students read the novel. I find that those who did not read (or used online summaries) score in the 0-30 range, students who read (but not closely or thoroughly enough) score in the 40-60 range, and students who have read closely and understood the text score between a 70-100.
Scores on this style of quiz are generally low to start out, but if you keep with it and have conversations with students about the types of questions the quizzes usually ask, they will get better quiz grades and retain more details from the novels they read. For my students, this then translates into better, more detailed essay responses at the end of the novel.
I use this quiz with my AP Literature class. It is difficult, so I would not recommend it for use in a class with struggling learners or ELLs.
