This à la cART art bundle is for elementary classroom teachers or home schoolers – full of projects inspired by the Japanese contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama. Each lesson has been successfully tested and used with TK (Transitional Kindergarten) to grade 5 students. It starts with an easy project, and gradually gets more involved. Each lesson can be tweaked to fit the ability of your students.

You do NOT need to be an art expert as these art lessons are perfect for teachers who do not have a broad background teaching art. Each lesson comes with a short, read-aloud introduction of the artist with embedded questions to engage students.

You will Receive

  • 130-pages, non-editable PDF
  • 8 different art lessons (45-60 minute) duration art project

  • an introduction script to read aloud with questions to engage students

Materials Needed

I design à la cART lessons to be completed with simple art supplies as it is difficult enough trying to cart materials from one classroom to another. Here is a list of supplies needed for ALL of the Yayoi Kusama inspired art projects in this bundle. Feel free to substitute or adjust the sizes and colors used:

□ watercolor, thick or card stock paper

□ photocopy paper

□ tissue paper - white

□ large colored circle confetti (Dollar Store)

□ pencils

□ black sharpies

□ Crayola markers

□ oil pastels (variety of colors)

□ watercolor paint

□ liquid tempera or poster paints

□ recycled bottle cap lids

□ toilet paper rolls

□ liquid glue

□ plastic bowls to use as templates

□ plastic wrap

□ paint brushes

□ paper plates

□ 8.5”x11” transparency film

□ air-dry clay

□ bamboo skewers

□ second hand furniture for “library reading nook”

□ spray paint - white

Approximate Time Needed

The time needed will depend on the age group of students but usually takes approximately 45 - 60 minutes for the read-aloud introduction, art lesson and clean up – extra time for extension activities.

Read Aloud Introduction

You do NOT need any art and / or art history knowledge to teach à la cART lessons – it is all laid out for you. The read-aloud introduction introduces the artist and explains art movement and techniques pertinent to the lessons; with questions guiding student conversation.

Reference Materials

I like using visuals to support my lessons. Due to copyright infringement, the art pieces are not included but I have listed the artist and title of the artwork. You can do a Google image search and then share with the class by projecting on a smartboard or whiteboard.

A scrapbook cover is included. Students love collecting and showcasing their art in a portfolio. Scrapbooks are a great way if you have the budget. Hand-made portfolios are a great alternative.
