WELCOME TO CORE CITY!

After exposing our students to "YES" through a variety of activities for one week and "NO" for a variety of activities for a week, we focus on YES and NO responses for an additional 2 weeks.

This activity set is a COMPANION to our YES and NO COMPLETE Activity Sets.
(it does not contain components of our program such as the parent introduction letter, map and map key of Core City, sensory search activities, writing etc.)

This COMPANION includes the following components:

*Visual Supports: Picture symbols of each word can be placed all around the environment. You will be provided with the visuals to use as door signs and lanyard necklaces.

*Modified Core Communication Board: This board is modified to include the TWO target words (YES and NO) in the same location as a full complete core 30 board. This aids in the development of motor planning and provides the foundation for the use of an expanded communication board.

Leveled Core Language Boards

*Chatter Book: This interactive book elicits both YES and NO FACTUAL responses for a total of 15 trials. Children will practice responding multiple times throughout the book by placing a picture symbol on each page.

*Adapted Literacy Component:
Work on the concept of the target word through repetitive exposure throughout a structured literacy activity using the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle.

This includes:
*Color-coded Communication Board AND
*YES/NO Activity:
Provide visuals for students as you ask factual questions while reading the book and/or after reading such as "Did the caterpillar eat an apple?" (yes) or "Did the caterpillar eat pizza?" (no). Sort items to respond YES or NO.
(This is a companion to the book. You will need to purchase the book separately.)

*Don't forget to use key strategies while teaching core language and developing AAC skills:
**Provide TIME for students to communicate! (it helps to count to 10 in your head) **RESPOND to spontaneous communication whenever it occurs!
**Provide AAC and VISUAL SUPPORTS for each activity!
**Use activities and materials that encourage ENGAGEMENT, INTERACTION and TURN-TAKING!
**Create COMMUNICATIVE OPPORTUNITIES throughout the day in as MANY situations as you can!
**MODEL those words!
