Product Description
This is a collection of 10 books, one for each month of the school year, that we make in my kindergarten classroom. The books teach early reading skills, sight words, whole language, poetry, counting and writing skills.

September Apple Book

The September book is shaped like an apple and each page contains part of an apple poem. On each page, the students must draw a picture to match a certain part of the poem. The words are shaped and sized so that even non-readers can figure out what each page says. For example, the word big is written in large letters and the word round is written in a round shape. This is a good confidence booster for beginning readers and my brand new kindergartners love taking this home to "read" to their families.

The book reads:

Apple big
Apple little
Apple with a worm in the middle
Apple round
Apple tall
All are picked in the fall

This is also a fun poem to memorize and recite for Johnny Appleseed Day.

October Ghost Book

We make the October book after reading the book The Ghost's Dinner by Jacques Dequennoy. In his book a ghost hosts a dinner party and the guests change color every time they eat a new food. For example, when they eat spinach they turn green. You can still make this book without reading The Ghost's Dinner - just explain the concept to your students.

In this ghost book each page reads "This ghost ate..." The students must fill in the blank and then color the ghost according to what it ate.

November Turkey Book

The November book is one my students create to celebrate Thanksgiving while working on reading their color words.

On each page, the students color the turkey's feathers to match the words on the pages.

Pages include...

This turkey has red feathers.
This turkey has orange feathers.
This turkey has yellow feathers.
This turkey has green feathers.
This turkey has blue feathers.
This turkey has purple feathers.
This turkey has rainbow feathers.

When finished, the book is tied together with a ribbon. This is a fun keepsake to send home to the parents and a great way for new readers to practice fluency.

December Christmas Tree Counting Book

The December book helps the students practice their counting skills. On each page, the students complete a sentence about the 12 days of Christmas.

Sentences include...

On the first day of Christmas my good friend gave to me...
On the second day of Christmas my good friend gave to me...
etc.

On each page, the students pick an object to complete the sentence and draw a picture to reflect the correct amount.

January Snowman Book

My students assemble the January book when we are working on persuasive / how-to writing. When assembled, it is a step-by-step guide on how to build a snowman.

The first page is just one snowball, then on each page, the snowman gets bigger and bigger until the last page is a complete snowman that the students decorate.
