About Year-Long Homework Bingo...
Homework does not need to be boring and tedious! Instead, give your students appropriate practice that is educational, meaningful, interactive, and FUN!
In first grade, as in all grades, homework is an important part of a student’s day. That is not to say that it needs to be boring and tedious! I figured Bingo is a very recognizable game, everyone likes to get 5 in a row (including the “free” spots with graphics on them), or even fill the entire card, and by doing their homework, everyone is a winner!
I have provided 40 weekly bingo masters already filled with the kinds of activities a first grader would be working on, and be familiar with. As the weeks go by, the activities continue to follow the progression and standards that are expected of students in this grade. The activities also spiral what has already been learned, and they serve as review. Blank Homework Bingo grids are included in case teachers find a need for them, and they are to be filled by the individual teacher, accordingly. The bingo masters are given in color and black and white so they can be colored in by the students.
Along with the weekly bingo masters, you will find “Additional Resource” pages which will serve as templates for some of the activities that the students are to complete. There is an explanation of games and how to play them, so you can talk about those and provide the rules to the students.
There are some curricular areas that can be negotiable and do not need to be done every week, and then there are some that I feel are non-negotiable, and students do need to complete each night at home. Reading for 20 minutes, and the skills we are working on in math would be non-negotiable. These activities are listed in the two diagonals of the bingo card, and are expected to be completed by the students. Things like sight words/High Frequency Words, spelling list activities, writing, penmanship, etc, are included, and completion is encouraged, but not mandatory. Please see more in the Preview!
