Are you tired of your students memorizing their spelling lists but not applying the skills to their writing?! I WAS! I created a phonics bundle that followed a skill progression starting with short vowels and moves toward more complicated letter pairings.
How it works in my room:
Each week I send home the weekly sheet that tells the skill, rules, previous skills that are reviewed, and ways to practice. We practice it in a variety of ways throughout the week and test on Friday. The difference from how many teach spelling is that students are only given 5 of the words that will be on the test. The test consists of 15 words, so 10 of them are words they haven't necessarily been able to practice but they are capable of spelling if they are applying the weekly skills.
How it could also work:
It could also be used as an intervention for students lacking a phonics base which effects their reading and spelling ability.
-30 weeks of send-home notes
-Test lists to test over the weekly skills
-A parent note explaining the unit
