There are 10 Units of Vocabulary, each being 3 weeks long, which means you get 30 weeks of vocabulary centers! Each week has 3 - 4 vocabulary words that students will be working with. The goal of this center is to get students listening, speaking, reading, and writing high level vocabulary.
In the beginning of the week we display the vocabulary cards with the pictures. If you use the new Benchmark curriculum these words align and are pulled from the weekly big books- if you don’t use Benchmark you can simply write the definition on the board for students.
After your normal vocabulary lesson, have students use this center with their table (try not to have groups more than 4 - 5). Students must work together to look at sentences A and B to decide which sentence best matches the definition and picture. Then, there are two worksheets for students to complete depending on their ability. We have all students start with the word and picture worksheet in the beginning of the year. Then, students who are ready can either use the word in their own sentence, or if they are not feeling confident about one of the words, they can copy sentence A or B (whichever they thought was had the correct use of the word).
PRINTING: It is best to print these in color and laminate. When cutting out the cards, it is best not to cut apart A and B cards so students do not have too many pieces.
We hope you find this helpful to get your students listening, speaking, reading, and writing high level vocabulary.
