This packet goes along with The Year of Billy Miller, the new book by Kevin Henkes about a second grader. This book is perfect for a beginning of the year read-aloud for a second grade class. The book is too high of a reading level for most second graders to read on their own, but they will love listening to the story as Billy navigates his way through the school year facing many of the same problems they will see (an annoying sister, a mean girl in his class, a big project, and a scary presentation.)
Use this packet to keep students accountable for whole-group discussions after reading. Or, work on it with them in small groups to reinforce concepts from the story.
Included in this packet are:
* Character studies for each of the major characters (Billy, Sal, Papa, Mama, and Emma)
* Chapter outlines for each of the 4 major sections (Teacher, Father, Sister, Mother) that ask students to describe the plot of each section
* Extension activity asking the students to write a poem for a special person like Billy did in the last section and to design a new book cover
