I spent the past year collecting poems from the internet (and wrote a few of my own) that matched themes throughout the school year. Each child in my class receives a marble composition notebook at the beginning of the year to use as a Poetry Journal. Every week, we read the weekly poem together under my document camera. Children help me find sight words and rhyming words. Students are given their own copies to glue in their journals. They highlight the sight words we have learned so far and underline the rhyming words, then draw their "visualization" of the poem in the space below. Students use these journals as "good fit books" during Daily Five and silent reading and take them home nightly for fluency practice.
