Here is a way to capture your student's writing progress for an entire school year. Create a Writing Portfolio for each quarter of the school year for your students to use.
The portfolios can be made all alike or the teacher can differentiate the booklet for each child. This gives the purchase of this product a lot of mileage!
Practice writing all week long. On one day a week ask students to write their BEST story in their portfolio. By the end of the quarter you have 9 examples collected of each students work and by the end of the year you have 4 completed books!
There is a rubric that shows what writing should look like by the end of the year. Each teacher can have students highlight on the rubric what skills should be in the story at the time of the current writing. At the beginning of the year the rubric is mostly white. At the end of the year the rubric is mostly yellow. This is a great visual for students and parents to view because it allows them to see that all the hard work in writing has really paid off. The rubric can also be highlighted with each child at a writer's conference. Not every child has to have the same items highlighted at the same time. This makes the rubric and the writing differentiated for each child. A blank rubric is also included so each teacher can make the rubric fit the needs of his/her individual class.
The booklet becomes a collection of work that can be used for formal or informal assessment on writing. The booklets are very helpful to show at parent-teacher conferences and at student data meetings. The contents of the portfolio show where growth is occurring and where extra support might be needed.
There is also a variety of paper types included to fit the needs of the students in your classroom. There is a Wide Lined Paper Choice, a Narrow Lined Paper Choice, a Single Line Paper Choice, and a page with no lines where the focus is more on the picture with labels or a sentence. The teacher decides to make the book single sided or front-to-back according to the needs of her/his writers.
When making the book the teacher can select how to create the book for each quarter. There are 'Word Charts' of helpful words for each quarter, Sight Word pages to add, and a page called: Words that are Special to Me.
The book can be created in a variety of ways depending on each teacher's personal choice. This product can also be used year after year in a variety of grade levels giving the purchase a lot of longevity.
I hope you enjoy using the writing portfolio in your classroom!
