A few years ago, while looking to spice up my opinion writing instruction, I created a "Yelp Restaurant Review" resource. It was a HUGE hit with my students! They loved the authenticity, and I have never seen my students more engaged in their writing. So, I wanted to expand my Yelp reviews to include more than just restaurants.
This file contains a complete unit of opinion writing projects for you to conduct with your students. You can easily spread these writing activities out over the course of the year, or could pick and choose which writing prompts to do over a shorter period unit. You can print each final copy page separately to display, OR print all the final copy pages into a student packet to keep throughout the year. You can have your students complete these writing projects at a writing center, whole group, or at a writer's workshop.
Prior to engaging in these activities I like to have students read several actual “Yelp” reviews on a similar topic (after screening them myself, of course!) and evaluating their worth and validity as a class. In my experience this has helped create student “buy-in” and has made for wonderful student engagement! Viewing actual Yelp reviews online or on the app shows students some good examples of reviews, as well as some not-so-good reviews. This leads to wonderful classroom discussions about what they should or shouldn’t include in their own Yelp review.
