Incorporate a yoga brain break into your ELA block, story time, or anytime your students/children need to refocus with a movement break. Who Will See Their Shadows This Year? by Jerry Pallotta and David Biedrzycki is a fun book to read for Groundhog's Day. This yoga sequence gets your students up and down and up and down through over 3 pages of yoga poses, breathing, and mindfulness. They will move through the book doing yoga poses for the animals and the corresponding weather patterns that each animal's shadow causes. What a fun way to reinforce cause and effect while increasing student focus while calming the mind and body!
This activity is meant to support lessons for the standards listed for 1st and 2nd grade not to evaluate or to be used in isolation. The activity pages can be easily displayed on an interactive white board or printed and displayed on a document camera. The Boardmaker images make it easy to view each pose and are appropriate for students of varying ages and abilities. This brain break may be used following a read aloud of this picture book or, if your students/children are familiar with this story, use it as a character and sequence review to increase comprehension and to reinforce the concept of cause and effect.
