Yoga Brain Breaks can help manage classroom behavior by giving students time to stimulate their brains and calm their bodies. It can increase focus and decrease test taking anxiety, calm and activate the brain at the same time, and increase comprehension when paired with an academic task. Brain breaks based on read alouds may be included as part of the ELA block to reinforce comprehension and story sequence or use it during a social skills lesson. The simple pictures used for each yoga pose is appropriate across grade levels and abilities.
The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle is is a great story to introduce how important it is that as a person we are each different and should embrace that individuality. Discuss with students what makes them special. This yoga sequence takes students from sitting to standing multiple times but in a logical sequence that gives their bodies ample time to move and stretch while becoming engaged in the story. The full sequence ends with a calming time for students to contemplate what makes them special.
