You Are the Teacher – A Following Directions Activity
This was created because many of my students have following directions goals this year, and through the years, I have developed this activity and have found it a great resource for the development of following directions. As I have worked with my students over the years, I find that they really need development with processing, retaining, requesting clarification and executing directions. My students appear to really love this lesson, as they are able to draw little pictures and are proud of their work, as they have had a part to complete it.
There are 27 directions in the activity and the lesson usually takes me 30-40 minutes to complete. With groups that require more assistance, the lesson will usually take me two sessions to complete.
*** I emphasize with the students, MANY things have changed at your school since you have been there, and although you school may only have two floors, now it has four.
The students must be monitored for accuracy of responses, or the lesson will not work out correctly. The lesson works best with five to six students. When I push-into classrooms with larger groups of up to 12-15, I will walk around the room to monitor and request assistance from the classroom teacher.
Concepts targeted are as follows: on top, left hand side, first, next to, located in, directly above, second, diagonally across from, either side of, above, adjacent to, bottom, corner, right of, between, fourth, third, under, in, directly below, etc.
I have included a data collection sheet so you can record your students’ responses and determine which concepts need to be reviewed or taught further.
