You Don't Know Me is a novel I use with my ninth grade students. It is an poignant story that is well written and perfect for this age. When we read the novel, I break the text into five parts, and students are required to complete the guided reading questions as they read independently. When they finish each section, they meet in modified literature circles (or "book clubs") to discuss each section. I sometimes pair this with Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and have half my class read each novel (or split it between the boys and the girls).
